This series of workshops is aimed at the novice weaver or a complete beginner.
Workshop 1: NOW FULL Wednesday April 13 2 to 3.30pm. An introduction to the basics of weaving: materials, equipment, techniques and terminology. Participants will have the opportunity to begin a small sampler on a provided card loom with the opportunity to purchase suitable warp and weft yarns – but bring along any you already have.
Workshop 2: Wednesday May 11 2 to 3.30pm. An investigation into flat weave techniques including colour changes and joining. You may continue on a card loom but a simple frame loom is a preferred alternative.
Workshop 3: Wednesday June 8 2 to 3.30pm. Building on the skills acquired previously, we will introduce texture so that designs for practical items – cushion covers, bags, mats etc as well as decorative wall hangings may be planned.
Cost: £15 per session.
Sessions are limited to a maximum of 5 people.
The workshops are being run by Carole Ann Grace, a painter and weaver known principally as an artist producing colourful, expressive paintings but constructed textiles have been part of her interest and experience from early childhood, when she learned to weave on a simple loom. Later, she followed the highly respected and technical Bradford Certificate in Handloom Weaving. Now her practice follows a much more free direction but is always underpinned by traditional techniques.
She worked for many years the College of West Anglia as a lecturer specialising in Fine Art (painting) and Woven Textiles. Also at her Snettisham Studio, she taught classes and workshops as well as working as a tutor for Adult Education and as a visiting lecturer to groups of teachers, occupational therapists, prison inmates, Weavers Guild members and WI groups, not forgetting all those who just wanted to know more about weaving.
