May

May has arrived, bringing with it sunshine and warmth and lovely flowers. It is without a doubt one of my favourite months of the year. I love the variety of fresh greens in the countryside and the hope of all the new flowers, and the long evenings. And the swallows have returned, which always lifts my heart.

As you all know, the last couple of months have been fairly intense for me and not particularly joyful, so it is a relief to be able to look forward to this month and the events that we have going on in the shop. Not to mention the tiny break that I am taking mid-month to collect my daughter from Falmouth for the summer, which entails a detour via the Lost Gardens of Heligan which have been on my to list for many years.

So, what is happening this month? On 11 May Shannon from Blue Fern Yarns is doing a pop up shop here for the whole day, showcasing her gorgeous hand-dyed yarns. Do come along and see her. I love her shades – she is an amazing dyer with an extraordinary colour sense, and her wools are gorgeous and soft – my favourite is her Shimmer, which a luxurious blend of merino and silk.

On the same day, we are starting our next beginners crochet course and there is still availability on it. You will learn how to crochet from the first chain to a granny square over 3 weeks. The course is taught by Mandy who is an extraordinarily skilled crocheter. You can book it here.

A new exhibition is starting in The Gallery Upstairs on 18 May – the paintings of Joyce Trow. The Private View is on Friday 17th 5 – 7pm, and you are most welcome to come along, meet the artist and see the works before anyone else does. Claire Howard of Claire Howard Jewellery is running a jewellery making workshop – I know that that one is fully booked, but she has just given me dates for the rest of the year and you can find details of all her workshops here.

Our Knit and Natter dates this month are as follows:

Tuesday 7 May 11am – 1pm, Tuesday 14 May 2 – 4pm, Saturday 18 May 2 – 4pm and Wednesday 22 May 7-9pm. I love these groups – such a feeling of warmth and community. Someone was just saying to me today that the best thing about them is how much she has learned by coming along – she has just finished an amazing cable knit cardigan complete with hood which she says she would never have had the courage to knit before.

Last, but not least, we have two Bank Holidays this month – the 6th and 27th. Here’s hoping the weather smiles on us all. As I am never open on Mondays anyway, I look forward to spending them in my garden both working and perhaps relaxing. What will you be doing?

I’m looking forward to the crochet workshop. It will be lovely to learn a new skill.
