I used to think that spring was my favourite season, but I have changed my mind and have decided that my favourite time of year is the beginning of September, the end of summer, when the weather is beginning to feel autumnal and there is a strong sense of new beginnings in the air. I feel as though I ought to be getting some new stationery and worrying about school uniforms (thank goodness no longer).
Here in the shop, we started the new term as we mean to go on with an excellent Drop Spindle workshop, given by Theresa of The Spinning Barn. Theresa taught me to use a spinning wheel so I already knew what an amazing teacher she is, but it was still a joy to participate in the class and to watch her working so patiently with everyone. I think I got the knack of it, but like all these things it is going to take some practice. She did point out, however, that it is a lot more portable than a spinning wheel!
Mandy and I are going to spend some time in September planning our workshops for 2027. If there is anything you would like to learn, or if you have any feedback on dates and times, please do not hesitate to contact us. In the meantime, we have some spaces on the Introduction to Knitting Course on Saturday 26 September and on other courses going on through the rest of the year.
We have our Social Stitchers Seaside Sunday event in Cromer next Sunday 13 September which we are very much looking forward to. Some twenty people will be gathering for a day of knitting or crocheting, eating and chatting in the lovely surroundings of the Cliftonville Hotel in Cromer. The event is fully booked, but we have set up another one for January – on the 17th because we feel people might need something to look forward to once Christmas is over.
After the excitement of the West Yorkshire Spinners sale, which has left our shelves looking somewhat depleted, our Autumn/Winter stock is beginning to arrive. We took a delivery of some yummy chunky yarns last week – Natur Uld by Hjertegarn and Lang Yarns Mosaic and Magnolia variegated yarns which are a delight to knit – along with some DK from Malabrigo – their delicious 100% merino Arroyo (still to be put on the website I am afraid). We are expecting all sorts of other yarns, and a big delivery of Thread & Maple goods. I have some hand dyed yarn drying at home as well.
Best of all, I am heading off to Harrogate on Sunday for the annual Knit Show, an excellent trade fair. I will be delivering my son to his new accommodation in Leeds at the same time – he really is going Back to School as he starts his PGCE there on Monday – he is training to be a history teacher. I will miss having him at home, but it is good that he is starting something new and exciting. I have not been allowed to purchase any stationery for him, but I will make up for it in a shopping spree at the trade fair, so watch this space!
